I know the first movie was not a huge hit, and that it has more of smaller fan base, but I was still hoping that since it did find some success in the International area, that Pacific Rim 2 (Pacific Rim: Maelstrom) would happen. Well after a recent rumor that suggested that production was being delayed from this coming November until some time in 2016, that things were not looking too good. Now, according to Indiewire, it looks like Pacific Rim 2 is on “indefinite hold” according to the report.
Apparently the deal between Legendary Films and Universal Pictures, which was formed back in 2013, is starting to see some trouble. The two studios are butting heads on projects, this includes Kong: Skull Island, which Universal didn’t think could work. Along with Pacific Rim 2 being a film of contention, Guillermo del Toro‘s horror film, Crimson Peak, was also a hot topic for Universal with a huge budget that Universal didn’t put a cent towards. Lastly, Warcraft is being seen as a “problem movie” for the studio as well. So it sounds like things are not going well in this partnership, at all, and we already have our first casualty, Pacific Rim 2.
