It’s hard to believe we’re entering our third year in the “next generation” of console gaming. And what a year it’s been! 2016 is shaping up to be another fantastic year with a new a Zelda game, Uncharted 4 and what I am sure will continue to be an ever-growing list. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a quick look back at 2015 and give some recognition to an incredible year of some of the best gaming the industry had to offer. Instead of spewing a list of my Top 5 games of the year, which happen to be Rise Of The Tomb Raider, Until Dawn, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Batman: Arkham Knight, I thought I’d do something different and highlight my Top 5 Gaming Moments of 2015. These moments are the reason we play games; those awesome, jaw-dropping moments that leave us speechless, stunned or just have us shouting at the top of our lungs in excitement. So without further avail…
Call of Duty: Black Ops III
Another year and another Call Of Duty campaign under our belts. We all know what to expect in our annual Call Of Duty story modes. Action, set piece action, random action, and scripted action. This year’s Call of Duty was a bit different, however. Set in the future, not only do you unleash hell on enemy soldiers on the battlefield, but robots as well. In fact, there is a chapter midway through the game with a scene that involves robots that feels like it could been taken right out of a Terminator movie. I could almost hear John Connor screaming “kill the machines!”
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
In what turns out to be a bitter-sweet affair since this will be the last true Metal Gear game as a result of the bad breakup between MGS designer Hideo Kojima and Konami, I almost didn’t want to finish the game. I did, of course. One of the coolest moments in the game was when Snake wakes up from his nine-year coma, ’80s music playing, in the hospital. I won’t spoil what happens next, but it truly captured one hell of a gaming moment for me.
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Chronicles X was my first encounter with the Xenoblade series, but as a SciFi lover, the game’s trailer sold me. The game has a Battle Star Galactica meets James Cameron’s Avatar and begins when Earth is destroyed in an alien war and you find yourself crash landing on the planet Mira, in the year 2054. You are immediately greeted to a wonderful world of adventure, danger, and interesting alien life. Spanning over a hundred hours, the game is full of amazing moments of exploration and awe.
Probably my sleeper game of the year. Being a die-hard G1 fan, I couldn’t help but wipe the tear off my cheek when Optimus Prime and the Autobot entourage shows up to put a stop to Megatron’s latest attempt at world conquest. The entire experience plays out like a lost episode of the animated series that you control. The result is a feeling of danger that you’ve never experienced while watching the cartoon. The return of the animates series’ voice actors only solidifies this as the G1 Transformers game of my dreams.
Star Wars: Battlefront
I am not going to enter the internet debate of the retail content vs. the season pass. What I will say is the game is a lot of fun. I’m glad we finally have a new Star Wars Battlefront game and yes I’m looking forward to the season pass. With that, this game takes the number one slot for my top gaming moment of 2015 because the feeling you get when watching the game on an HD screen for the first time, as the Empire’s massive AT-ATs stomp across the Hoth terrain while Rebel Snowspeeders zip by in attack patterns, is one of greatest gaming moments of 2015. It didn’t get any better than that for me.
