Comic properties are hot at the box office and now, thanks to dedicated series on television networks and streaming services like Netflix, at home.
While most comic-based movies and shows have revolved around the superhero genre, The CW is going to test the waters on a non-superhero franchise greenlighting a live-action pilot based on the Archie comic series. Titled Riverdale, the series is set in the present day and explores suburban life in the Archie hometown. The pilot’s logline describes the series as:
Set in present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, Riverdale is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.
Besides Riverdale, The CW’s pilot lineup includes a yet-to-be-titled thriller set on a Martian colony; a 19th-century monster origins detective journey, Transylvania; an untitled paranormal project; Frequency, a modern-day reimagination of the New Line Cinema 1996 film; and a rom-com titled No Tomorrow that follows a couple fulfilling the bucket list items before the imminent apocalypse.
