Thank You Marvel and James Gunn, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Is Amazing!

reviews-coffeeFor comic book fans, when you mention Guardians of the Galaxy, you will find two camps. One is a fan of the original Guardians, who were essentially a future version of the Avengers. The other are fans of the rag-tag group of characters led by the charming Star-Lord. As much as I appreciate the heritage of the Guardians, I’m in the camp of the later. I like the oddball type of character and the newest Marvel movie is full of them.

From the first moment when Marvel announced the Guardians of the Galaxy movie at Comic-Con, I was very excited to see the likes of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora and Drax jump from the pages of comics books on to the big screen. After seeing the movie tonight, I don’t think director and writer James Gunn could have done a better job. I felt as though I immediately knew these characters as they were spot on to the comics. The chemistry between them was perfect.

I will say that each actor owned the character they played. Chris Pratt was brilliant as Peter Quill/Star-Lord. Gamora’s lethality and beauty was done perfectly by Zoe Saldana. I have to admit I was a bit worried about Dave Bautista as Drax, but he managed to squash any concerns I had. Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket was another concern for many, myself included, but Rocket managed to steal the show. Even Groot with his three words, “I am Groot”, managed to win our hearts.

Lee Pace plays Ronan the Accuser, and does a fantastic job of being an intimidating villain. Showing no signs of being persuaded from his end goal, Ronan is a force to reckon with all through out the movie. Even his accomplice, Nebula was a scary individual showing no love for anyone. It is also great to see that no matter what he plays in, Michael Rooker is a mean bastard. I was a little worried that the changes to his character Yondu, an original Guardians team member, would be too much. But I gotta say, I loved his performance and this updated version of Yondu.

I was even more excited to see my favorite Marvel villain get some more screen time. That would be Thanos. Marvel has big plans for him, as they are slowly revealing the Infinity Gems, which we can probably safely assume is leading to Thanos bringing them all together with the Infinity Gauntlet and showing the Marvel Cinematic Universe the true power of The Mad Titan.

To date, the best movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is still a hell of a movie, but after tonight Guardians of the Galaxy has jumped to the front. It was full of action, humor and a touch of sadness, creating one hell of a movie. Now the long painful wait until Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to arrive on July 28, 2017.

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Djimon Hounsou, Benecio Del Toro, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Gregg Henry, is now in theaters!

I just left theatre. I have never read any of the comics, so I went in pretty fresh. One aspect I love about science fiction space themed films are when I am taken on a “tour” of the universe. Gaurdians of the Galaxy…..WOW. I felt I just watched a timeless instant classic and will be watching this with a smile on my face 20 years from now. Forget “best Marvel movie”, this was my movie of the year!

    • It was great. I would say, yeah, movie of the year. Cap 2 is a close second for me. A very close second. Marvel is on fire now. Can’t wait to see how Avengers: Age of Ultron turns out.
