Syfy Renews Defiance For A Second Season! Defiance MMO Game To Get More DLC Too

television-news-and-talkOn Friday it was announced that Syfy has renewed Defiance for a second season, after premiering only 4 of its 13-episode first season. Defiance is Syfy‘s joint multimedia project with Trion Worlds, who have created a new sci-fi world that is supported with a massive multiplayer online (MMO) video game. The premiere episode of Defiance is the second-biggest series premiere in the network’s history and has continued to lead its Monday-night time slot in key demographic ratings and total viewers for a cable drama. With nearly 4 million viewers watching the premiere of Defiance in its first week, the show has continued to deliver strong demographic numbers and more than 2 million viewers each week so far. The second season will begin production this summer in Toronto for a 2014 release.

There will also be a Defiance marathon on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 25th. So those that are behind on the show, or want to check it out for the first time, here is an excellent opportunity. Defiance has got better with each episode too, so if the pilot episode didn’t really interest you, maybe give it another shot.

It has also been announced that the supporting MMO will see some growth this year too. Developer Trion Worlds announced this week that five downloadable content (DLC) updates will be coming in 2013. The first DLC will introduce the Castithan species to the game. It will cost $10 and will also unlock a new story mission line and a new Battle Arena game mode. April 15 Premiere Second Largest Series in Network History

New York, NY – May 10, 2013 – Syfy has renewed its groundbreaking series Defiance, giving a 13-episode second season order to the critically acclaimed hit that has catapulted Syfy to the top cable drama spot in the time period among adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers for three consecutive Mondays. Season two of Defiance, produced by Universal Cable Productions, will begin production in Toronto in August for a 2014 premiere, returning as the anchor of Syfy’s Powerful Monday’s block of primetime original series.

Redefining the transmedia experience, Defiance has distinguished itself with an unprecedented partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds, by creating the first-ever true convergence of television and online gaming. Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica, Hellcats) resumes his role as executive producer and showrunner. Smallville’s Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin return as executive producers for season two and Michael Taylor serves as consulting producer.

Set in the near future, Defiance features an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races. NEW YORK – May 9, 2013 – Syfy will get Summer 2013 off to a blistering start this Memorial Day weekend featuring a festival of the Roger Corman classic films Sharktopus, Piranhaconda, Dinoshark, Supergator and Dinocroc vs Supergator on Monday, May 27.

The special holiday weekend programming begins on Friday, May 24 with monstrous movie delights such as Mega Python vs Gatoroid and Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus.

That will be followed by all-day marathons of Syfy’s new hit series Defiance on Saturday, May 25, and a Paranormal Witness scream-fest on Sunday, May 26. The popular paranormal series returns for Season 3 beginning Wednesday, June 5 at 10PM (ET/PT).
