At $411,002,906 worldwide, Pacific Rim did enough to be considered for a sequel. Currently it hasn’t been given the go ahead from Legendary to enter production, but it is being looked at. This hasn’t stopped Guillermo del Toro from working on a script for a sequel though.
While doing promotional tours for his FX horror series The Strain, del Toro talked to Buzzfeed and shared that he and Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk) are currently at work on the Pacific Rim 2 script and that it does include Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) from the first movie. This dispels the rumors that it would be a prequel story, but will in fact be a sequel that follows the events of the first.
Fingers crossed that Pacific Rim gets a sequel. Considering that Godzilla is already spawning talks of a sequel and it hasn’t beaten Pacific Rim in a worldwide total yet (it still has a few regions to open in still), I would hope that it stands a good chance. (Source: Buzzfeed)
