In the days leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney and Lucasfilm have increasingly been revealing footage, photos and tidbits of information about the next entry in the Star Wars saga.
Continuing with the trend, Lucasfilm released a photo of the film’s presumed antagonist, Kylo Ren, sitting in front of the damaged Darth Vader helmet we initially saw in the first official The Force Awakens trailer, in October. The helmet, burnt in a pyre by Luke Skywalker on the forest moon of Endor after his climactic battle with Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi, is significant in that it represents the awakening; what the film’s director JJ Abrams says is the rediscovery of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia by a generation of people for whom they would be myths to, now 30 years later.
“These would be essentially kids who didn’t see Star Wars themselves, in this movie, who would be in this universe.”
Besides connecting Darth Vader’s helmet to an owner, the photo reveals the resemblance of Kylo Ren’s helmet, which we get a full look at for the first time, to Darth Vader’s. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters December 18, 2015.
