New Blu-ray Releases: Week of May 13, 2014

Orange is the New Black Season 1 Blu-ray

While I Frankenstein and Her may be the movie studios’ picks for new Blu-ray releases this week, we think you’ll find more gratification with a few catch-up discs that will prepare you for upcoming releases at home and in theaters.

For starters, if you haven’t seen the first season of Netflix’s original series Orange Is the New Black, shame on you! Season 2–the full season–will be available June 6 (on Netflix, of course) so now’s a good time to catch up. If you’re not a Netflix subscriber, grab Season 1 — we’re sure you’ll ask yourself why you aren’t a subscriber. If you are a Netflix subscriber, prepare to commence binge watching!

Following last weeks trailer, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes promises to be more intense than it’s outdated predecessor, 1972’s Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. If you need a refresher on how we arrived at the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Rise of the Planet of the Apes will answer those questions and get you ready for Dawn’s June 11 theatrical release.

Superhero and comic fans, we din’t forget you! Batman Begins is back on Blu-ray, this time with accompanying DVD and Digital HD / UltraViolet copies, which we love (the Digital HD, that is). An updated Sin City Blu-ray also debuts this week and it includes two discs with the theatrical and recut, extended, and unrated versions.

Finally, wrapping this weeks new Blu-ray releases is the Fast & Furious 6-Movie Collection. You get all six F&F flicks on Blu-ray with Digital HD / UltraViolet copies to load up on our PC or iPad. At the time of this article, the price for the set was under $10 a movie, which is less than what you’d pay for a single ticket to each movie in theaters.
