Finally some new details have surfaced for the live-action Patlabor: The Next Generation movie. First and foremost, it will have a 7-part series that will lead up to the premiere of the movie. Each of these will be released in the Shinjuku Piccadilly theater, which set to start premiering on April 5, 2014. Then it will be followed by the remainder of the seven parts:
- Part 1: April 5, 2014
- Part 2: May 31, 2014
- Part 3: July 12, 2014
- Part 4: August 30, 2014
- Part 5: October 18, 2014
- Part 6: November 29, 2014
- Part 7: January 1, 2015
Each part is estimated to be at 48-minutes long, with a prequel episode scheduled, that will be about 10-minutes. The feature-length film will open during Japan’s Golden Week holidays in the spring of 2015, and clock in around 100 minutes long.
The Anime News Network reports that this is not a remake of the earlier Patlabor anime stories, but a completely all-new project. The story is set in Tokyo in 2013, and it represents the “third generation” of Patlabor. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police has disbanded its Section 2 Division 1 of police robots, and Section 2 Division 2 barely survived the budget cuts due to the long recession.
There are no details about if and when this will premiere in North America. Hopefully something will be announced in the coming months. There are also some new behind-the-scenes images, which I’ve mirrored a few of below, but there are more to check out over at Anime News Network here. (Source: Anime News Network)
