Originally supposed to have a larger part in the 2008 Iron Man movie, it was removed just weeks before shooting says producer Kevin Feige. It was brought up again for Iron Man 2, but the timing was not right. Now in Iron Man 3, the Mandarin makes his movie debut. The Mandarin, who is played by Ben Kingsley, has been one of Tony Stark’s greatest adversaries. For decades Tony and the Mandarin have fought and now it spills over to big screen. Although in the comics the Mandarin is Chinese, this version is not.
We aren’t saying he’s Chinese, we’re saying he, in fact, draws a cloak around himself of Chinese symbols and dragons because it represents his obsession with Sun Tzu and ancient arts of warfare that he has studied.”
This certainly doesn’t take away from the character in the slightest bit. He is still just as every bit as ruthless as he has been in the comics. This is a man who feels his ideals are worth fighting for, even if he is perceived as a terrorist. The Mandarin remained in secrecy until now, when he faces off against Iron Man.
