Happy New Year From Pop Critica!

Wow, another year gone by in a blink of an eye. I know everyone says this, but, honestly, this past year just flew right by. 2015 was the first full year for the Pop Critica website after merging with Flying Ninja Kick. After ironing out a few issues, we’ve been able to focus on what we love doing, critiquing pop culture. We’re having a great time and hope that you are too.

I know that both Rich and Travis shared some of their favorites of 2015 already, so I figured I’d share some of mine, as well. Here’s a look at my favorite movies and action figures / collectibles released in 2015.

Top 5 Movies of 2015

Spectre 007

  1. Spectre
  2. Mad Max: Fury Road
  3. Ant-Man
  4. Avengers: Age of Ultron
  5. Jurassic World

Runners-Up: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Minions, Boruto: Naruto The Movie, and Bridge of Spies.

These types of lists are always so hard for me, especially when it comes to movies. I really enjoyed most of what I saw this year, but for me, Spectre really did it. It was a great modern Bond film with a classic feel to it. Daniel Craig has totally sold me as James Bond now and is rising to the top of my list as 007 agents, trailing only the men that made Bond who he is; Sean Connery and Roger Moore.

After Spectre, the other four films in my Top 5 are just a lot of fun to watch. Mad Max: Fury Road is just chaos from start to finish. Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron proved that Marvel still has what it takes to create a blockbuster superhero movie and make it fun in the process. Lastly, the sequel that many fans have waited 20 years for Jurassic World wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was still great to see the dinosaurs return to the big screen–and come away as the winners.

Top 5 Action Figures/Collectibles of 2015

Sentinel Fighting Gear Gatchaman G1 and G2

  1. SEN-TI-NEL Gatchaman G1 / G2
  2. S.H. Figuarts Iron Man Mark 45
  3. Figma Metal Gear Solid Snake
  4. NECA Pacific Rim Otachi / Flying Otachi
  5. IAmElemental Courage Series 6.5-Inch Figure

Runners-Up: DC Collectibles DC Icons Mister Miracle, Hasbro Marvel Legends Thanos Build-a-Figure, Hasbro Star Wars Black Series Captain Phasma, S.H. Figuarts Kinnikuman Shogun, S.H. Figuarts Age of Ultron Captain America, Mezco Toys Mortal Kombat X Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Like narrowing down my Top 5 Movies of 2015, narrowing down a Top 5 list for action figures / collectibles is a daunting task because there are a lot of great products released throughout a calendar year. As you can see in the feature image to this post, I have many favorites from 2015. Similarly to Rich’s current tastes in collecting, I too have shifted my focus to Asian-based collectibles makers with products originating from Japan and China.  I’m currently enjoying product from Bandai / Tamashii Nations, Good Smile Company and SEN-TI-NEL, but there are definitely some standouts among domestic U.S. companies–like NECA’s Pacific Rim Otachi deluxe figures and IAmElemental’s 6.5-inch Courage Series figure.

Looking Ahead

With 2015 now in the books, we look forward to 2016. What will 2016 bring us? For starters, we’re hoping more great collectibles to add to our collections. There are already some great pre-orders lining up in the first few months of 2016, so things are off to a promising start. With Toy Fair right around the corner (Feb. 13-16), we’re hoping to see big things revealed for later in the year, too.

Stay tuned for more from us in 2016 as we look to take big strides in making Pop Critica your top destination for pop culture news and reviews.

Happy New Year from the Pop Critica team!
