At the end of June, Marvel announced that fans could could see 17-minutes of Guardians of the Galaxy IMAX 3D footage in select cities. The preview was for July 7th (today). Sure the movie opens in just over 3 weeks from today, but still cool to get a chance to see some new footage. So I registered to go check it out.
And so I ventured to the closest IMAX theater near me showing the preview. I’m glad I did. The footage shown was scene with the Guardians in the line-up as we have seen in the trailers, but it was slightly different. There was a little extra when Gamora was up that show her ties to Ronan and Nebula, plus Thanos too. We then jump to the scene of them being lead down the hallway of the prison where Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) gets in the fight with the prison guard/worker over his Walkman.
Then things move along to Quill getting hosed down and led to a room to put his prison suit on. Then Rocket is led into the room after being hosed down too. Quill notices the enhancements on Rocket’s back from being experimented on. Then we see Quill, Rocket, Groot and Gamora led into the main part of the prison where they are met with less than a warm welcome. Rocket and Groot lay claim to Quill and threaten anyone that stands in their way, then Rocket starts to formulate a plan to escape.
He starts to ramble off things he needs and Groot overhears one of the things and wonders off to get it, not realizing that Rocket says to get it last because all hell will break loose when they go for it. So as you can imagine, a fight breaks out and they go to work. There are some great moments here, one of which is watching Rocket and Groot go to work. Drax also gets in on this action and the Guardians work their way to the guard tower to make their escape. Overall, this was a great scene, lots of fun action and some well-balanced comedy. Also, I could watch a movie with just Rocket and Groot at this point, they were great.
There was also an extended version (now online) of the second Guardians of the Galaxy trailer shown, which had a little extra footage to it. Including for a second, Michael Rooker’s Yondu. I think Marvel has a hit on their hands with this movie, this definitely felt like the next level for the Marvel films that has been established with Captain America: The Winter Solider.
Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Djimon Hounsou, Benecio Del Toro, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Gregg Henry, it is set to be released in theaters on August 1, 2014.
