Warner Bros. Japan has announced that it will produce a live-action movie based on the popular manga / anime Fullmetal Alchemist.
Fullmetal Alchemist follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric as the search for a philosopher’s stone that will reverse a failed Human Transmutation experiment. The experiment, an attempt to bring the Elric’s mother back to life using alchemy, left Edward without a right arm and left leg, and Al bodiless with only his soul bound to a suit of armor. The series takes place in a fictional universe resembling Europe during the Industrial Revolution, where alchemy is the prevailing scientific practice. The manga series debuted in 2001, with the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime series, which closely follows the manga, debuting in 2009.
The Warner Bros. live-action movie will be directed by Fumihiko Sori and star an entirely Japanese cast. The movie will be set in Europe, following the manga / anime. The Fullmetal Alchemist live-action movie is scheduled for release in the winter of 2017.
