Did Playmates Toys Let The Bebop and Rocksteady Out of the TMNT Bag?

toy-news-and-talkLooks like Playmates Toys may have prematurely let the cat out of the bag. Sometime between yesterday and earlier today, they had posted bios for two new characters on their site for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line-up. The two characters might be a little familiar to some, Bebop and Rocksteady.

These classic bumbling characters have appeared over the years in the different forms of the Turtles, but this will be their debut for the Nickelodeon version. Rumor has it, Bebop and Rocksteady are to premiere in the third season (along with Usagi Yojimbo!) later this fall. For now though all we have are two rendering images of the characters, which have since been removed from the Playmates Toys website. So until they return, enjoy what we have. (Bios that appeared on the site too, since removed)

Bebop was originally a kind of punk, mohawk-sporting, human thug employed—and mutated—by Shredder. Like his best buddy, Rocksteady, he appeared in the 1980s TMNT show. During a fracas with the Turtles, Shredder turned these gang members into mutant creatures. Bebop became a warthog, still wearing his purple Mohawk and punk gear. Although larger and stronger, both Bebop and Rocksteady still lacked intelligence and failed to defeat the Turtles in any battle. Their incompetence and goofy behavior overshadowed any advantage they gained from their physical transformation.

Bebop and Rocksteady are names that were taken from music genres. Bebop is a style of jazz while Rocksteady is a Jamaican style of music originating from the late 1960s.
