Daily Rewind: Cameron and Rodriguez Team-Up For ‘Battle Angel Alita,’ X-Men TV and More!

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez Teaming Up for BATTLE ANGEL ALITA Adaptation

According to a report from THR, director Robert Rodriguez is in talks to direct James Cameron’s live action adaptation of the Battle Angel Alita manga. Cameron’s adaptation is titled Alita: Battle Angel (uh, ok), the project is a retelling of the original story about a female cyborg that is discovered in a trash yard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The story becomes a young woman’s journey to self-discovery. The project is something Cameron has been trying to bring to life for years, a script has been written, but it is not known if any re-writes have been done or planned. Personally I am very reluctant to see a live action Battle Angel Alita become a reality, I feel like it could end up like another video game adaptation. What about you?

Warner Bros. and Legendary Announce Monster Movies Galore!

Some pretty big news today from WB and Legendary. They officially announced a trio of monster movies today. Kicking things off in 2017 is Kong: Skull Island; then in 2018 comes Godzilla 2, the sequel to 2014’s Godzilla; and lastly in 2020, it’s going to be Godzilla Vs. Kong. Now I’m not entirely sure how badly fans have wanted a Kong sequel, but I can say I’m all for another Godzilla film. And I’ll try to hold judgement on Godzilla Vs. Kong until they can show how exactly these two are supposed to be opposing forces for each other considering they are drastically different in size. What do you think about these announcements?

Y: THE LAST MAN Getting Some Attention Again, FX Developing A TV Series?

One of Vertigo Comics most popular series in the last decade, Y: The Last Man, is back in the spotlight. At one time the sci-fi series was in development as a movie to be released from New Line Cinema with David Goyer, Carl Ellsworth and director D.J. Caruso attached. But differences with New Line caused them to part ways. Now according to THR, the FX Network is searching for a writer to work with Y: The Last Man creator, Brian K. Vaughn, to adapt it as an ongoing series for television. This project is in early development stage, but will be produced by FX and FX Productions. As a fan of the Y: The Last Man comic series, this news has me pretty excited for this project.

Two X-Men Projects Announced For TV, HELLFIRE and LEGION!

Marvel has announced today that two X-Men projects will be heading to television. Tentatively titled, Hellfire, the series is set in the 60’s and follows a young Special Agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires – known as “The Hellfire Club” – to take over the world. Many fans will more than likely recognize The Hellfire Club as one of the X-Men’s arch-enemies that spawned Sebastian Shaw and the White Queen herself, Emma Frost.

The other project is titled, Legion, and will tell the story of David Haller, the son of Professor Charles Xavier and Gabrielle Haller. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real. Haller has been a deep-rooted part of the X-Men universe since his creation in 1985, with most of his appearances having lasting effects.

Pilots for both shows will be co-produced by Marvel Television, with 20th Century Fox Television handling the physical production on Hellfire; and FX Productions on Legion.
