Chemists Nearly Bond Krypton With Nitrogen in Effort to Create Kryptonite

Krypton MonoxideChemists at the Polish Academy of Sciences came very close to creating kryptonite, the fictional radioactive element from Superman’s home planet of Krypton that weakens him and other Kryptonians.

The scientists ran a series tests, building off previous studies, putting krypton under severe pressure. They found that the noble gas, which is chemically inactive at extremes, has the ability to form krypton oxides after bonding with oxygen, thus creating krypton monoxide. While the team wasn’t able to bond the element to nitrogen in order for form kryptonite, their research paves the way for future studies of the element.

Superman can breathe easy; for now.
