There have been rumblings of something big heading our way in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some have speculated Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet, or possibly Civil War. Now the thought was it would be a tent pole movie based on one of these events. Well it is looking like that is partially true. Tonight Variety is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is on the verge of signing on for Captain America 3.
The rumored plot for the upcoming sequel will have Tony Stark facing off against Steve Rogers (aka Captain America), as they fight over the Superhero Registration Act, which required all superheros to reveal their secret identities and act as a superhuman police force for the government. This was the premise for the 2006 Marvel Event titled, “Civil War.” So it looks like that story will be making the transition to the MCU.
With Downey Jr. recently saying on The Ellen Show that Iron Man 4 was in the works and he was returning, only to later in that day he back peddled to say that things were still being discussed, this latest report is interesting. He only has two movies left in his contract with Marvel Studios, so if he does this, then Avengers 3, then his contract is obligated. So it looks like Iron Man 4 might be off the table for good then.
Also of interest, Marvel tweeted an image today teasing a new Civil War event for summer of 2015. It is sounding like the Marvel Universe — both in print and film — will be struck with strife.
Captain America 3 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 6, 2016. (Source: Variety)
