A First look at Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’

hollywood-movie-newsThanks to Entertainment Weekly today, we have our first look at Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel, an elf character that is The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. According to director Peter Jackson, “She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.” Fans might be scratching their head’s now, because Tauriel is not found anywhere in any of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original fantasy novel, or in any of his other writings either. She is a new character added to Jackson‘s expanded Hobbit story. Lilly is expecting some backlash for her character’s addition, but feels that fans should trust Jackson‘s judgement and respect for the source material. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theaters on December 13, 2013. (Source: EW)
